As part of my commitment to transparency and ethical practice, I want to ensure that you understand your rights regarding billing for counseling services. Under the No Surprises Act, you are protected from unexpected medical bills when receiving emergency care or non-emergency care at in-network facilities.
While the No Surprises Act primarily applies to emergency medical services, it also includes some important protections for mental health services, especially when you are receiving care from out-of-network providers. Here’s what you need to know:
- Emergency Mental Health Services:
- If you are treated for an emergency mental health issue (such as in a crisis situation at an emergency room or urgent care facility), and if those services are provided by out-of-network mental health professionals, you will not be responsible for charges above the in-network rate.
- Out-of-Network Counseling:
- If you are receiving regular, non-emergency counseling services and I am out-of-network with your insurance, the No Surprises Act does not directly apply. This means you may be responsible for paying the difference between what your insurance covers and what I charge for services.
- If you are self-paying for counseling services, I am required to provide you with a good faith estimate of what your session costs will be upfront.
- Clear Communication:
- I will always work to ensure you understand the cost of services before we proceed. If you are unsure about your insurance coverage or if you would like to confirm whether I am in-network or out-of-network, please reach out to me or your insurance provider before starting services.
- If I provide any out-of-network services, I will inform you of potential costs upfront and offer options for payment or alternative arrangements, such as a sliding scale if applicable.
- Your Rights:
- If you feel you have been unexpectedly billed for services, the No Surprises Act provides mechanisms for dispute resolution for certain types of out-of-network charges, particularly in emergency care settings. Feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions or concerns about your billing.
I’m here to make sure you feel informed and confident in your care. Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions about billing practices, insurance coverage, or your rights under the No Surprises Act.
